The European Network on Independent Living (in short ENIL) is an organisation
supporting the rights of people with disabilities. ENIL wants to know more about people with disabilities living independently in Europe. They want to know more about the good and bad experiences people with disabilities have when living independently. People who want to talk to ENIL about their experiences can do it at this link. |
The European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) has launched an open call for contributions to its Shadow report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by the European Union (EU).
The UN CRPD is a human rights instrument defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of all persons with all types of disabilities. It entered into force in May 2008 and has been ratified by the EU in December 2010. In late 2014, the EU will submit its initial report on its implementation to the CRPD Committee.
In conjunction with the official report of the EU, ENIL will also submit a Shadow report in September 2014, on Article 19 of the CRPD, referring to Living independently and being included in the community. Therefore, for a wider and more complete perspective of the realities at hand, ENIL welcomes contributions from both the civil society and general public.
‘We have chosen to focus on Article 19, since we consider it deserves more attention than it is commonly given in the official and shadow reports that cover all the CRPD articles,’ ENIL stated in their official announcement.
The organisation has created a Questionnaire for contributors to fill in, collecting insight about pertinent issues related to Independent Living, the obstacles people with disabilities are still facing and best practices that need be shared. Respondents do not need to answer all the questions in it, having the option of offering information selectively. The Questionnaire can be found at the following link and the deadline for contributions is 16 May 2014.
