European Parliament adopts resolution on the rights of persons with disabilities
etr The European Parliament (EP) has agreed on a resolution.

The European Parliament represents people living in the European Union (EU).
A resolution is a statement brought out by a political institution
that should lead to change in policy orto solving a certain problem.

In this case, the resolution should lead to EU member states
respecting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Convention is a list of rights that should not be violated.
The resolution specifically describes what countries should do
in order to respect the rights of people with disabilities.

Yesterday, the European Parliament declared its support for the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) by adopting a resolution on realizing its full implementation. The vast majority of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), across political parties, agreed on its content. A plenary debate and a public hearing followed during which MEPs, representatives from the disability movement and from the EU institutions discussed the state of play of the implementation of the UN Convention.

Through this resolution, the European Parliament supports the adoption of two key pieces of legislation: the European Accessibility Act and the General Antidiscrimination Directive, both essential parts of implementing the UN Convention. The resolution also calls on the Member States to adapt their national laws to the obligations of the UN and specifically to respect the right of all persons with disabilities to vote and to be elected.

The European Disability Forum (EDF), of which Inclusion Europe is a member, welcomed the European Parliament’s resolution and its involvement in the review process.

EDF has said that the Parliament should fully respect the UN Convention when it acts as a public administration, by creating an inclusive work environment, and by making its meetings, communication and procedures fully accessible to persons with disabilities.
