In many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, children with disabilities and Roma children are still placed in the segregated classrooms and schools receiving inferior education. Mental Disability Advocacy Centre (MDAC) and European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) called for inclusive education for all children on the occasion of International Students’ Day on 18 November.

Segregated classes limit possibilities of children with disabilities and Roma children to interact with their peers. Often they receive inferior education to the mainstream one, which sharply influences their future. They chances to access higher education are limited, as the schooling doesn’t prepare them appropriately to access the institutions of higher learning and follow study plans.

As MDAC states: “These practices are a violation of binding international law and have been found contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights in numerous judgments. States should act with urgency to respect these judgments.”

As MDAC explains in their statement, the role of the United Nations should not be undermined. The recent report of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on discrimination of women with disabilities in Moldova raised the point on the discrimination of children with disabilities and Roma children as well. Disability or ethnic origin should not be a barrier nor a prejudice which would unable any child to attend the education of his choice.
