Multiple discrimination is keeping women with disabilities from reaching their true potential

Most people with intellectual disabilities in Europe are denied the right to take decisions, being placed under guardianship regimes that allow them no say in important matters related to their own lives.

Multiple discrimination is keeping women with disabilities from reaching their true potential
etr Inclusion Europe has a website called Choices.
You can see it at: http://www.right-to-decide.eu/The website shows ways to support people with intellectual disabilities
to make decisions about their own lives.
There are many good ways to support people
and Inclusion Europe is looking for even more.

So if you want to share some of these good ways
to support people with intellectual disabilities
you can email us at secretariat@inclusion-europe.org

Being able to make decisions and feeling accountable for them is central to one’s self-esteem, and instrumental in how people perceive their quality of life. Most people with intellectual disabilities in Europe are, however, denied this right, being placed under guardianship regimes that allow them no say in important matters related to their own lives.

Luckily, in line with Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the European Union has signed and ratified, guardianship regimes must be replaced by supported decision-making models that provide individualised support for persons with intellectual disabilities. To further this process Inclusion Europe has created the Choices website, presenting a range of supported decision-making models for people with intellectual and other disabilities. While there are many good practices available which can help supported decision-making, they are often scattered and hard to find. Choices therefore gathers and analyses the wealth of resources, making it easy for the reader to find the information they need, either by choosing the relevant area of life the model would be relevant to, or the type of support needed.

We are now looking to discover new and inspiring practices to add to our website, and need your help to do so! Have you heard of a good practice example? Do you know a great grass-roots project you would like to share with the wider public? Let us know! Please send your input to secretariat@inclusion-europe.org and do your bit to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities are in charge of their own destinies.

Our work brings the voice of people with intellectual disabilities and their families where decisions about their future are made.

This has always been incredibly important. It is even more so with the Covid pandemic drastic impact on their rights and lives.

Being visible and vocal on issues directly affecting millions of people requires your support.

Become Inclusion Europe supporter and help us keep doing our work.
