Members of the European Parliament will ask questions to the new Commissioners
The European Parliament is also part of the European Union.
Other European organisations can also propose questions
The European Disability Forum (in short EDF) is one organisation that proposed questions.
EDF wants people with disabilities to have more rights.
The Social Platform also asked questions.
They asked questions about jobs and poverty.

The candidates for the top posts in the European Commission are being interviewed by MEPs this week ahead of their confirmation as EU Commissioners for the next five years.

As part of the interview process, MEPs will ask questions related to the candidates’ suitability and interests related to their proposed portfolio.

Prior to each hearing, MEPs are asked to submit three written questions directly related to the future Commissioner’s competency to the role as well as another two indirectly linked.

For example, the Committee for Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) has asked Commissioner-designate Marianne Thyssen to state her position on social inclusion of the most vulnerable groups within the European Union. Thyssen, the proposed candidate from Belgium, has vowed to subscribe to a “greater social dialogue” in response.

The European Disability Forum, of which Inclusion Europe is a member, has submitted questions to supporting MEPs on a variety of different issues relating to improved rights for people with disabilities in the European Union, such as measures will you take to ensure a better inclusion of persons with disabilities in the  Europe 2020 strategy review, or legislative initiatives aimed at fighting discrimination in education.

The Social Platform, a European platform for rights-based NGOs in the social field, which also has Inclusion Europe as a member, also proposed several questions for the upcoming College of Commissioners.

Following articles in E-Include this month on disability hate crime and the increased likelihood that people with disabilities will live in poverty, questions of particular importance to the rights of people with intellectual disabilities submitted by the Social Platform are:

•    How will you make sure that the EU extends the law to tackle hate crime and violence?
•    How will you ensure that the mid-term review of the EU’s 2020 Strategy leads to imminent progress on poverty reduction?

The Commissioners-designate will have a huge influence over the rights of people with intellectual disabilities throughout Europe. So, for more information on how this will impact on the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, take a look at the profiles of the candidates here or follow the hearings live here.
