In December 2013, the European Commission initiated a public consultation on patient safety and quality of care. Civil society organisations can contribute to the survey with their opinion on the quality of health services provided in the member states. The consultation also inquires whether the services improved after the adoption of the 2009 Council Recommendation on patient safety.

The consultation wants to identify which areas of patient safety are lacking in the Recommendation and whether the Recommendation improved the quality of care in the member states. Moreover, civil organisations can suggest which activities can improve the quality of healthcare and patient safety beyond the Recommendation.

The Recommendation of the European Union on patient safety proposed numerous actions to be implemented in the EU countries to promote patient safety and set it as a policy priority. It also recommended setting up appropriate training of health care professionals to ensure patient safety and quality of services.

In 2012, the European Commission initiated three-year collaboration between the patient organisations and to exchange best practices on ensuring the quality of healthcare. The Commission will also monitor the implementation of the EU directive on patient’s rights embedding a number of provisions about safe and quality care in the health sector.

Civil society organisations can fill in the public consultation questionnaire until 28 February 2014.

You can find the questionnaire here.
