In recent months, the Ministry of Interior of Iceland has been working on a translation of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The translation is prepared on the basis of the Action Plan for Persons with Disabilities for the year 2014 which was approved by Parliament as a part of preparations for the ratification of the UN Convention.
The Árni Magnússon Institute has undertaken the leading role in the translation of the Convention, with Agusta THorbergsdóttir, Language Policy Officer, being in charge of the project. Their main role was to ensure the translation terminology is in line with other international agreements and is also attentive to the demands on terminology from interests groups representing people with disabilities. The cooperation with other Ministries, the Union of Local Authorities, Disabled People Iceland, the National Federation for Intellectual Disability and National Mental Health Organisation was established to receive constructive comments from experts on the draft.
Consequently, the final version of the translation was sent for comments to consultative ministries and interest groups for ratification of the Convention. The final translation is now published on the website of the Ministry of the Interior. The following step is to pass the validation process and subsequently, the document will be published in the Official Journal after the completion of the ratification of the UN Convention.
