The Icelandic Penal Code has, at long last, been updated to exclude discriminatory terms to describe people with disabilities. Among the many examples, the term “idiot,” which features in Article 222 of the Penal Code, has now been replaced by the phrase “individual with a developmental disorder.”

In recent months, the Ministry of Interior of Iceland has been working on a translation of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The translation is prepared on the basis of the Action Plan for Persons with Disabilities for the year 2014 which was approved by Parliament as a part of preparations for the ratification of the UN Convention.
