Inclusion International (II) and the Kenyan Association for the Intellectually Handicapped (KAIH) regret to announce that they have been forced to cancel the 16th World Congress of Inclusion International, which was supposed to take place on 10-13 June 2014 in Nairobi.
The European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) has launched an open call for contributions to its Shadow report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by the European Union (EU).
On 25th of October Inclusion Europe organised a Strategic Policy Seminar for the members of its network in Brussels. In monitoring the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a key challenge recognised by Inclusion Europe’s members is the identification of evidence concerning state’s progress on disability policies and their impact on people with disabilities. Legal capacity, community living and participation of people with intellectual disabilities were repeatedly highlighted as priorities of our advocacy agenda.
Over 160 persons with intellectual disabilities and supporters from 20 different countries took part in the 3rd European conference of self-advocates held on 4-6 October 2013 in Zagreb.
The tenth session of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2 to 13 September 2013. During this session, the Committee considered the initial reports received from three State parties, namely Australia, Austria and El Salvador. It also adopted a list of issues on the initial reports submitted by Azerbaijan, Costa Rica and Sweden.
In a public letter, the Mental Disability Advocacy Centre (MDAC) called on the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) to uphold disability rights standards. The Committee needs to ensure its recommendations on the Czech Republic are brought in line with the CRPD so that it is in a position to offer a global approach to human rights for all, MDAC noted.
Under the auspices of Olga Sehnalová MEP, Inclusion Europe organised a roundtable meeting of stakeholders in legal capacity and supported decision-making in the European Parliament.
The European Report “Children’s Rights for all! Implementation of the UN Convention on
the Rights of the Child for children with intellectual disabilities” revealed that across the
whole of Europe, children with intellectual disabilities are highly vulnerable to discrimination,
neglect and exclusion.
