The “Access City Award” is an award by the European Commission for cities which make efforts to become more accessible. One of last year’s winners was Lugo (Spain): The city has not only improved access for people with physical disabilities, but also for people with intellectual disabilities, by putting pictograms on public buildings to make it easier to understand which public services the respective administration offers.
2018 is the eighth year of the Access City Award, open to European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.
This time, the European Commission would like to put an emphasis on accessibility for persons with intellectual disabilities. The Commission mentioned people with intellectual disabilities explicitly in the call.
The deadline for applications is 11 September 2017, midnight Brussels time.
If you know about a city in your region which has done efforts to improve accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities, please tell the city administration about the Access City Award. It is an excellent opportunity to promote accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities.
As the cities would like to get in contact with previous winners and other stakeholders a Yammer network was created. This network is an opportunity for individuals, administrations, companies and associations to join the debate and share their practices to improve accessibility in EU cities.
The Access City Award Ceremony will take place on 5 December 2017 during the European Day of Persons with Disabilities conference. Self-Advocates are invited to this conference in the framework of this year’s Hear our voices.

The “Access City Award” is an award from the European Commission.
It is an award for cities that try to be accessible
for persons with disabilities.
Last year one of the winners was the city of Lugo in Spain.
They made it easier for people with disabilities to move around in their city.
They also made it easier for people with intellectual disabilities.
They put pictures outside of every public building.
On the pictures you can see what is inside of the building.
For example a kindergarden.
Or a clothing shop.
The cities which have won the Access City Award would like to stay in touch with all interested people.
So they created an online network.
You can access the network here.
