The INAS Open European Athletics Championships is a sports competition for people with intellectual disabilities It tooks place from 11 to 15 June in Bergen. Bergen is a city in the Netherlands. The INAS Open European Athletics Championships took place between 11 and 15 June, in the Netherlands. The competition is an International Paralympic Committee sanctioned event, bringing together over 150 athletes with intellectual disabilities from up to 20 countries world-wide. This year European athletes were joined by delegations from India, Hong Kong or the United States of America.
The games have a double significance for participants. Apart from giving them an opportunity to win much desired medals, their results will also be considered when selections for the Inas Global Games and the Rio 2016 Paralympics will be made.
The Open European Athletics are a testimony of the effort, dedication and enthusiasm of the participants. As Chloe Knight, member of the British team explains: “I am delighted to have been chosen as part of the GB Team. It’s such a great opportunity to be competing in these International Championships, I have put in the training and hard work and it is fantastic to see that it has paid off”.
Taking place in the south-western Dutch city of Bergen, the organisers are promising the Championships will be “more than a sports event”, revealing that they have also planned a busy socio-cultural agenda for all involved, which includes outdoor excursions, historical visits and food tastings.
