On 26 March, EVA (Ensemble pour une Vie Autonome) is organizing an event in the Walloon parliament in order to discuss the aspect of independent living with associations, political representatives, academics and experts from both Belgian and European level.
EVA is the Walloon division of the European movement ‘Independent Living’ that strives for more inclusion and accessibility, and for a society in which people with disabilities can fully participate. EVA is organizing this consortium within the context of several European governments currently rethinking their policy towards people with disabilities. Generally, there is a noticeable political change from a passive approach to a more active one focusing on more autonomy for the people concerned.
This inclusive approach has become an international standard, to which the topic of independent living ties in seamlessly.
The event aims to put national and European law into practice on local level, as well efficiently combining a legal framework with models of good practice when developing new policies and services.
During the convention, two topics in particular will be discussed: what the principles, values and rights are concerning independent living and how these can be translated on political and jurisdictional level. Participants will also discuss how this can be achieved through citizen participation. EVA says the event will be organized in a constructive, collaborative way. There is the possibility of interacting live via social networks, allowing everyone to participate, especially those who are directly affected by the issue of independent living.
