of Persons with Disabilities (in short, UN CRPD).

The European Disability Forum (EDF), the Academy of European Law (ERA) and the European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability (EFC) have come together to organise a series of seminarson EU Disability Law and the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). They will address the training needs of three target groups: members of the judiciary, legal practitioners (including NGOs and academics) and policy practitioners.

The UN CRPD outlines the global legal standards on disability rights and as such is an important and instrumental tool for promoting the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities. It recognises the changes in accessibility required to respect the dignity, autonomy, independence and inclusion of every individual across the world, regardless of intellectual ability. EDF is providing ERA its expert knowledge on the UN CRPD through speakers offering participants the opportunity to understand the fundamental principles and key concepts of the Convention. They will discuss European legislation and the correct implementation of disability provisions under these legal acts. The aim is provide participants with the knowledge and legal tools to implement the UN CRPD and relevant EU law into their daily practice so persons with intellectual disabilities can enjoy equal participation in society on the basis of their rights.

The next workshop you can register for is 13 – 14 October 2016 in Trier, Germany and will be in English and German through simultaneous interpretation. The discussion will address:

  • The UN CRPD: the key concepts, its purpose, principles and obligations.
  • The role of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
  • Building and implementation of the UN CRPD through EU law
  • How to account for the UNCRPD and include disability issues into the legislative cycle
  • Best practices for an inclusive implementation process

Participation is open to national civil servants, policy/legal practitioners, members of NGOs/equality bodies with a legal background and law academics from EU member states and countries part of the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme. Those who have been selected to attend will receive free participation as well as a contribution towards travel and accommodation expenses.
