New Zealand, Mexico, Republic of Korea,
Belgium, Denmark, and Ecuador.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will hold its 12th session from 15 September to 3 October in Geneva.

The Committee will analyse the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in New Zealand, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Belgium, Denmark, and Ecuador.

In correlation to the Articles 19’s provisions on Living independently and being included in the community, the event initiated by the three NGOs is titled “You call this Independent Living? – Towards an interpretation of Article 19 that fully respects the rights of persons with disabilities”. You call this Independent Living? And will take place on 19 September, at Palais Wilson in Geneva.

Taking into account the negative effect austerity measure have had on the disabilities sector, but also the efforts European countries are currently undertaking in order to create a more inclusive society, the discussion will focus on the following the following three questions:

  • What is Independent Living?
  • What needs to be done to ensure disabled people are genuinely included in society?
  • How is Independent Living misinterpreted by Governments to keep the status quo?
