The “Europe in Action” conference happened from 5-7 June.
José Smits works with Inclusion Europe.
José went to the Europe in action conference.
She gave a talk about the conference.
She talked about inclusion.
This is what she said:
“In some countries we have inclusion.
But in other countries, we have not enough inclusion.
In some countries, children with complex support needs
cannot go to school.
In some countries, people with intellectual disabilities
- cannot vote
- cannot marry
- cannot have a job with their own income
- cannot make decisions about their lives
But there are also many good things happening.
For example, there are self-advocates who tell governments
what they should make better for people with disabilities.
Family members of people with intellectual disabilities have meetings.
They create groups to support people with intellectual disabilities.
Others support people with intellectual disabilities
so they can get a job”.
We have heard many stories at this conference.
We have heard from people with intellectual disabilities
who left institutions.
For example, Elisabeta Moldovan.
Elisabeta wrote a book about her life.
Some of them leave these institutions thanks to the help of friends.
At the conference, we also went outside of the conference rooms.
We talked to the people in the streets.
This was very important.
We learned a lot from them.
We need to work together in to make society better
for people with intellectual disabilities. At this conference, we looked at how we can change society.
Everybody can make a difference.
Every small step is important.
There are many things you can do:
You can ask questions and send an email to people you met at the conference.
You can be in contact with Inclusion Europe.
Just write us an e-mail or give us a call.
We can also talk to each other social media.
We all have different languages.
But we can use GoogleTranslate for this.
Let’s keep in touch and make a change!
Next time we can talk about what we have done.
