The “Europe in Action” conference happened from 5-7 June.
For the conference, we went to Vilnius.
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania.
We talked about independent living for people with intellectual disabilities. And about inclusion.
José Smits is part of the team of Inclusion Europe.
She is also the founder of Inclusion Europe’s Dutch member
Inclusie Nederland. Some time ago José was invited
to a conference in Leipzig, in Germany.
Recently José Smits, Inclusion Europe's Secretary General and founder of Inclusie Nederland, was asked to participate in a conference about early intervention in Leipzig, Germany, by the European organisation Earlyaid. She went to talk about the importance of early intervention and to warn that austerity measures has led to a decline in services being offered to families.
Silence, stigma, not being believed: This is what makes it so difficult to talk about violence against women. For women with intellectual disabilities, these barriers are even higher – especially if they are living in institutions, segregated from the rest of society, with no one who would listen.
