Last January a fire killed 8 men
with intellectual disabilities
in an institution in Czechia.

was interviewed by a Czech newspaper.
Here’s what he said.
On 19 January, 8 men with intellectual disabilities were killed by a fire in a “care home” in Vejprty, Czechia. Another 30 people were injured. Messages of solidarity and concern about the situation of institutions in Europe came from all over the world.

Vejprty is a town in Czechia.
30 other people were injured because of the fire.
It is well known that "care" institutions of this kind are not suitable for living and represent a danger to the safety of their residents. The causes of the fire now must be investigated properly, and the survivors must get a chance to live in the community.

Barbora Mikulová lives in the north of Bohemia, in a town with 18.000 inhabitants. She spent virtually her entire life in homes and institutions. But finally, she moved to her own place. We asked her about how she managed to leave the institution and how her life has improved since then.
